Acupuncture for menopause

Acupuncture for the menopause

The peri-menopause begins around 10 years prior to the cessation of bleeding and most women are unaware of slight changes. The menopause is when women have ceased bleeding for a full 12 months and when they enter the post-menopausal phase of their lives.

In Eastern medicine this time is often regarded as a time of wisdom and empowerment for women rather than a time of struggle and physical ill health. Our societal scripts lead us to dread this time when it can be a time of great growth.

Western medicine has limited tools to offer women at this transition time and the information available is scarce. HRT has been shown to re-balance oestrogen levels and support symptoms for some and the side effects are known to be less serious as once thought and many women are choosing this to support their symptoms. However it is possible to work in  this transition time alongside Western techniques with the Eastern model.

Rather than fearing menopause, embrace it as a time of wisdom and empowerment. Acupuncture provides a natural and effective way to navigate this transition with grace, relieving symptoms and supporting your overall health.

This model has been shown to reduce hot flushes and night sweats as well as supporting anxiety and insomnia which are common menopausal symptoms. It works by reducing heat and calming the body's central nervous system. Additional symptoms can also be addressed such as joint pain, mood fluctuations and dryness. Dietary and lifestyle advice is usually discussed and suggested as this plays a huge role in this collaborative healing process.

If you're seeking relief from menopausal symptoms and want to embrace this transformative time, contact us today. Kate Henley is an experienced acupuncture practitioner who can guide you on your journey towards menopause empowerment and well-being.

FAQS

Here are some of our most asked questions, please do get in touch if you have any queries or would like to talk through how I can help you.

  • In Kate's experience, acupuncture is helpful in supporting some of the minor and more challenging symptoms of the transition time of the menopause.

These symptoms include hot flushes and night sweats, anxiety, insomnia, low energy, dryness, joint issues and brain fog.

The treatment is always given in conjunction with dietary and lifestyle advice and suggestions for improvement are offered in a collaborative way between practitioner and patient.

  • Generally speaking, acupuncture is quite a dynamic therapy and there is generally an improvement after 4 sessions.

For this reason, 4 sessions and then a review is often the treatment plan that is offered at the outset. These sessions can be weekly or fortnightly.

  • No is the simple answer! Hormone replacement therapy is designed and prescribed to adjust the hormonal profile of the body and varies from woman to woman as to how it works in the body.

Acupuncture works alongside this to support and balance the hormones and to calm the nervous system and the 2 work well together.

Some women try to alleviate their symptoms using acupuncture before they try HRT and this is also possible.

  • The menopause is a natural transition in the life of a woman where the hormonal profile changes and the body moves to a different phase.

Acupuncture can support the effects of the change and make this transition smoother but not reverse it. It is seen to be effective at working alongside the body's natural process.
