Acupuncture for Back pain & sciatica

treatment for Back Pain

Back pain, and especially lower back pain, is a very common chronic pain issue. An estimated 38 million workdays are lost every year in the UK due to this complaint.

Acupuncture is a well-researched method for managing this pain and can also be used for neck pain, arthritis, mid thoracic pain, fibromyalgia, TMJ (temporomandibular jaw pain) and all musculoskeletal pain.

The treatment consists of inserting needles at various points on the body and is usually painless and quite relaxing. The treatment allows the central nervous system to completely calm which gives for a body that is able to encourage its natural healing capacity.

Treatment for Sciatica

Sciatica is one of the most common complaints seen in the Clinic and can be a very debilitating and painful condition. It is seen acutely (recent onset) or more commonly chronically (experienced for over a month) and often patients are taking pain medication and have tried physiotherapy before they try acupuncture.

It is almost always caused by a herniated disc with nerve root compression. The sciatic nerve feeds into the lower lumbar vertebrae and gets 'pinched' and activated and the nerve pain can be felt down the side or the back of the leg. It is often worse for standing and sitting and better for gentle movement and stretching.

Sciatica can be caused by age related changes in the spine, excess weight that causes stress on the spine, diabetes, osteoarthritis, prolonged sitting or carrying heavy loads, natural degeneration of the discs or spondylolisthesis or scoliosis.

I came to see Kate for 4 sessions of acupuncture when my second bout of sciatica hit. The first time it took almost 6 months to settle and I was not able to do my usual exercise regime that made me feel very fed up and exacerbated the issue. Kate used massage, acupuncture and heat on my hip and leg where I felt the pain and after 3 sessions it was 80% better. I will be back if I have the mis-fortune to get it again!
